EDITOR’S LETTER
A good photographer we hosted on these pages, Maurizio Gabbana, had titled his review Absences, some time ago. Among the shots , one portrayed a woman trying to capture the attention of a young boy while he’s ‘scrolling’ through images on his mobile phone, immersed in his digital bulimia. The sky is totally free from clouds, signifying that ‘in today’s society there’s no man’.
Photography is not only an aesthetic challenge, but a social one: a creation of man that must serve man. “But today when photography is more than ever everyone’s business, man is not there,” writes Tony Miroballo in the commentary to his book “Esoteric Photography”, asking the question “why would ten Nazis photograph the same sunset”.
“Instead of it we find a gigantic cluster of two sterile representations, of images that increase by leaps and bounds every day and blur the view of the way forward”
Now, without attributing an eschatological meaning to photography, we can say, as an art that is not only figurative but symbolic, that it too can make its contribution.
Laying people bare and knowing how to do it well, with a thought form that supports the setting, certainly helps to bring the soul into focus. It certainly makes contact with the unconscious more than many other things!
Would Freud like our pictures? Who knows? Maybe, subconsciously, he will let us know….
