Christmas and the Metaverse. We are always on a track that runs between ‘on’ and ‘off’. Between things that are reassuring, that we know, that keep us anchored in tradition, and the compulsive wave of the New, unknown, mysteriously attractive. History as old as the world.
The American sociologist Nicholas Negroponte once said that our mind, stressed at unbearable speeds, tends to take refuge in comforting retro aesthetics to find some peace from the sting of the frenzy society subjects us to.
And at the end of the day, photography, like Christmas, represents a kind of salvific interlude where we can determine the time, the rhythm we want. Where we can find shelter from frenzy. Plato, whom we quote in the piece dedicated to Ugo Cacciatori, described a figure capable of mediating between the perfect world of ideas and the chaos of matter: the Demiurge. And he said that he had created time to give a moving image of eternity.
In a way, photographs also play with time, they fix it, they eternalise it… they freeze it. Photography is our bridge over the dual, the space between touching something and dreaming about it, between living and imagining.
We like it, being in the Middle Kingdom. We can take a better look at 2023!
